H.L. Leonard Rod Company

H.L. Leonard puts it best: You can buy a cheap functional graphite casting tool anywhere.

Simply put bamboo rods are crafted works of functional fly fishing art. Even though bamboo is a little old school, the casting and sensitivity rivals modern high-tech whizbang rods. Fly purists that use bamboo swear by it.

Unfortunately the bamboo rod industry has become tainted by mechanical and automated production facilities. This results in a cheap and massed produced rod.

H.L. Leonard hand crafts rods meeting exacting, detailed standards. The building process starts by splitting the bamboo and planing it down to the proper length and dimension. The individual pieces are then straightened using a heat source, this temporarily makes the bamboo flexible to it can be straightened and bound into the traditional hexagonal rod shape.

The rods are then hand thread wrapped. Wrapped by hand!

The H.L. Leonard rods are all lightweight in size and fly line weight for trout fishing. The Baby Catskill is a svelt 3 weight and six feet in length made for ultra light fishing and delicate casts.

The traditional Catskill is a more typical 5 weight rod coming in right at seven and a half feet of length and three pieces. This is just right for larger bodies of water or if you need to cast heavier streamers.

All of these rods have the traditional two ring reel seat.
